Backfeeding FAQs:
Once my number has ported over how do I backfeed my home?
- Basic backfeeding of your home is typically done in a few easy steps.
- First you will need to locate your previous phone company NID on the outside of your
home. This is typically a grey box with phone lines running out from it.
- Next you need to use a screwdriver and open up the customer access panel on the NID.
- Typically once you have access to this box there will either be a phone jack that
you need to unplug inside the box or 2 sets of wires (typically red and green) on
2 posts that you need to unscrew. When you unhook these wires you need to keep the
ends bundled together(red in one bundle/green in another) and then wrap some electrical
tape around them to keep out moisture/etc.
- You are now disconnected from your previous phone company.
- Once this is done you need to go to where your emta cable modem is located and run
a phone line from phone port 1 on the cable modem into a wall phone outlet. If the
outlet is already being used you can acquire a 2-way phone splitter so you can plug
2 lines in. You can typically pick this up from most retail stores or if you live
near the CAS office we can provide you one free of charge.
- Sometimes you may not have a phone NID on the outside of your home, instead there
will be a location usually in your basement where your phone lines tie together on
two posts. You just need to remove the phone lines from those posts and bundle them
together as described above.

After backfeeding I have static on my phone lines?
- This is typically caused by a loose or corroded phone wire or a bad phone or phone
jack.
- Typically if this just started to happen after you backfed your home you will want
to check out at your phone NID.
- Make sure that your phone lines are wrapped tightly together and that nothing looks
loose or broken.
- If everything looks fine in the NID then check the outlet near your emta cable modem.
Try replacing the phone jumper you used to backfeed your home with a different one.
- If you are still getting static on the line unplug your phones one at a time and
see if this fixes your issue. If it does then you more than likely have a bad phone.
After backfeeding all the lights are blinking on the Arris emta cable modem?
- This indicates that your modem is in over current protection mode.
- This means that you are receiving foreign voltage on your phone line.
- It is typically caused by a crossed phone line or bad phone. If it just started happening
when you backfed your home, go outside to your phone NID and make sure none of your
red and green phone lines are touching each other.
- If everything looks fine out there then start unplugging your house phones one at
a time and see if the emta goes back to normal.
- If this still doesn't fix your issue, you can call CAS and set up a service call
to have somebody come out and troubleshoot your phone lines.
