Internet Connection FAQs:
I hooked up a new computer and the Internet does not work?
- Whenever there is a hardware change (new computer/router) at the cable modem, the
modem needs to be reset for the Internet to reconnect.
- If you have just a regular Internet cable modem you will need to unplug the power
cord for about 5 seconds and then plug it back in.
- If you have either an Arris or SA emta cable modem then you will need to press the
reset button with the tip of a ball point pen on the back of the modem for a couple
of seconds.
- Once you have completed the above steps you may either need to restart your pc or
power cycle your router in order to connect to the Internet.
How to connect multiple computers to the Internet?
- A cable modem by itself is only capable of giving out 1 address for 1 computer. In
order to use multiple computers on the Internet at the same time you need to purchase
a router. This piece of equipment takes the 1 address that the modem gives out and
makes it so you can share your internet connection between pc's.
How can I make my computer or laptop work wirelessly so I don't have to be plugged
into the modem?
- In order to hook up a computer wirelessly you need to have a wireless router hooked
up to your cable modem. Once you have a wireless router configured, you will either
need a laptop with a built in wireless card or a desktop/laptop with a usb or pcmcia
wireless adapter.
How can I connect my computer to the modem through the usb connection?
- The usb connection will only work with windows 98 SE or newer.
- You will need to locate the modem cd and the usb cable that originally came with
your modem. If you have misplaced these items we can sell you a replacement at our
office.
- Once you have located these items you will want to power down your pc and then plug
in the usb cord between the modem and your computer. If you previously had an ethernet
cord running between the modem and your pc you will need to disconnect this.
- The next step would be to reset your cable modem either by pulling the power cord
if it is a basic cable modem or by pushing the reset button if it is an emta.
- Once all the lights come back on your modem you can power on your computer.
- Once your computer loads up you should get a found new hardware wizard window that
pops up on your screen.
- At this point, insert your modem cd and then follow the on screen instructions. Typically
you can direct the wizard to automatically install the software.
- If all goes well the wizard should tell you that you have successfully installed
the software and then you should be able to get online.
How can I run windows updates on my computer?
- There are typically two ways that you can access windows updates.
- The first would be if you click on your start menu then programs it will usually
be listed at the top.
- The second can be accomplished by opening up an Internet explorer window. Once your
browser loads click on TOOLS up at the top, and then WINDOWS UPDATE.
- Once your browser reaches the Windows update site you can either click on EXPRESS
or CUSTOM.
- EXPRESS will download your high priority updates and CUSTOM will let you pick and
choose between your high priority, optional, and hardware updates.
- Once you have installed all your updates it is usually a good idea to restart your
computer.
How can I create an icon/shortcut on the desktop of specific websites for quicker
access?
- First you would open up your Internet explorer and bring up the website that you
want to create a shortcut.
- Next you would click on FILE, SEND, SHORTCUT TO DESKTOP.
- This will create a link on the desktop that will bring you directly to the website.

Modem FAQs:
No lights are lit up on the cable modem?
- This indicates that your cable modem is not receiving power.
- Check and make sure the power cable is plugged in on both the modem and the power
outlet.
- If you are plugged into a surge protector make sure that it is turned on.
- If you have an emta cable modem try pressing the reset button on the back of the
piece of a equipment for a few seconds.
- If you are still not receiving any lights then the modem may not be functioning or
your power cord may have gone bad. You can bring your modem to our office and we
can test and diagnose it for you.
The downstream/receive light is blinking on my cable modem?
- This indicates that either the tuner has gone bad in your modem or the cable line
has become disconnected/gone bad.
- Check to make sure the cable line is still connected securely to your cable modem.
If it is unscrew the line and make sure the cable end looks solid.
- You can also plug a tv into this cable line and see if you get a picture. If you
get a picture, the issue is more than likely in the cable modem itself. If you don't
get a picture then something has happened to your cable outlet.
- You can always bring your cable modem in to our office so we can test it for you
and let you know if your cable modem is functioning.
- If it seems like your modem is fine then CAS can schedule a cable technician to come
out to your home and further diagnose the issue.
The upstream/send light is blinking on my cable modem?
- This indicates that your modem is receiving signal but it not able to send a signal
back out.
- Usually this happens if the customer has moved the cable modem to a different outlet
or if a customer has been adding cable outlets to their home and has rearranged the
splitters in their line.
- When you initially get your internet service installed the technician will set up
1 cable line to work with your modem. This is done to help keep extra noise and traffic
off of the line.
- If you are wanting to move your cable modem to another outlet you need to locate
where all of your cable lines come together and make sure that the line you are wanting
to use for your modem is not hooked up behind a silver barrel(filter) that has been
placed on your cable splitters. This filter is placed on the non Internet cable lines
to help keep extra noise/traffic off of the line.
- If you are not able to get your Internet line reconfigured you may call CAS and they
can schedule a service call for a technician to come out and do this for you. All
customers are entitled to one free modem relocate at no charge. If you have already
gotten your cable modem moved once then there will be a service charge involved.
My send/receive lights are blinking on/off at the same time?
- This usually indicates that your cable modem is receiving a firmware update. While
your modem is in this mode let it sit for a few minutes and see if it will reboot
by itself and then load back up normally.
- If your cable modem does not reset then manually unplug the power cable and plug
it back in and see if your modem links back up. If your modem links back up then
you should be all set. If it continues to flash the send/receive lights simultaneously
then please call CAS so you can speak to a technician and see if we can reconfigure
your cable modem
The online light is blinking on the cable modem?
- This usually indicates that the cable modem is configured incorrectly.
- First off try power cycling your cable modem and see if it links back up correctly.
- If the modem does not link back up call CAS so we can try and reconfigure your cable
modem.
The Internet is not working and there is no activity/link light blinking on my cable
modem?
- This usually indicates one of three things.
- Either the ethernet port in the cable modem has gone bad, the ethernet cable has
gone bad, or the NIC card in your pc has gone bad.
- Try replacing your ethernet cable and see if this fixes your issue.
- If you have more than one pc you can try hooking another pc to the cable modem and
see if the activity link lights up.
- If you just have a single pc then you can hook your computer up via the usb connection
instead of the ethernet connection.
- If after all this you still have no link/activity light your modem you may need to
bring your cable modem into the office for us to test and see if it has gone bad.
